THERE GROWS THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Sweet Water News

The Commonwealth is buzzing with activity, color, and life! Although Sweet Water Foundation continues to practice social distancing and mask wearing to protect the community, our summer programming is in full swing with a steady stream of new and returning visitors each day.

On June 19, 2021, SWF hosted its Fourth Annual Juneteenth Celebration at The Commonwealth, welcoming Values-Based Partners, neighbors, and market-goers to create, build and celebrate freedom and community. In July, SWF welcomed a new cohort of Apprentices and Fellows for the 2021 Summer Sweet Water Academy Urban Ecology Program.

In the coming weeks, Sweet Water Foundation will open its second installation in the Thought Barn - We The Publics...from Bounded Rationality to Unbounded Possibilities, a catalytic assemblage of art, artifacts, and history exploring the many facets and dimensions of the publics and public trust. The Commonwealth is also a host site for the multi-site exhibit, Toward Common Cause: Art Social Change, and the MacArthur Fellows Program at 40 (TCC). The Commonwealth is featuring two TCC installations -- Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle’s Hydrant, 41°47’22.662″ N – 87°37’38.364″ W and Mel Chin's Safehouse Temple Door.
Reservations are required to visit the installations, more details are below.

As the summer continues, Sweet Water Foundation looks forward to welcoming you to The Commonwealth during weekly Farmer's Markets. There GROWS the neighborhood!

SWEET WATER STORIES

2021 - "Let's Get It Done"
2021 MARKETPLACE IN FULL SWING

In early May, SWF launched its Seedling Market, providing seedlings to neighbors, farmers, and partners across the city. This year, our Farmer’s Markets have become more than just a random market. Fridays at The Commonwealth have turned into family days, reunions, and introductions to The Commonwealth.  Read more.
TRANSFORMING 'WASTES TO RESOURCES'

Nearly every week, SWF receives inquiries about acquiring materials that are destined for landfills. Because transforming ‘wastes to resources’ is at the heart of SWF’s practice of Regenerative Neighborhood Development, SWF creatively utilizes the vast waste streams of the city for materials as we grow the neighborhood.  Read More.

4TH ANNUAL JUNETEENTH AT THE COMMONWEALTH

RECIPES

KALE AND CHARD SALAD

This summer, Sweet Water Foundation team members and fellows have been taking turns making simple, fresh dishes to eat during lunch using produce from the SWF Community Farm. In June, Ali and Kayley, SWF Urban Ecology Global Fellows, paired up to create and prepare this kale + chard salad to offer as a food sample at SWF's Fourth Annual Juneteenth Celebration. The recipe is a simplified version of a Kale Kasabah Salad from traditional Moroccan culture. To learn more about the cultural context of traditional Kale Kasabah Salad, click here

Chard and Kale are two of the most highly requested produce items from the Community Farm. They are both high in vitamins and can be enjoyed either cooked or raw. This month, we invite you to pick up some chard and kale from SWF's Farmer's Market (every Friday from 12:00 - 2:00 PM) to enjoy this Kale + Chard Salad by Ali Kleiche and Kayley Estoesta.
