THERE GROWS THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Sweet Water News

We have officially entered the season of abundance at The Commonwealth!  At the end of June, the first sunflower opened up on the Community Farm, signifying the start of our abundant harvest season that will continue through October. Today, hundreds of sunflowers are in full bloom all across The Commonwealth, bringing new and vibrant energy to the site.

The past few months have been jam-packed with activities. From Wellness Wednesdays and Friday Farmer's Markets, to volunteer groups and Seeding the Future field lessons with nearby schools, The Commonwealth has been buzzing with activity.

On June 13, we welcomed the Summer 2022 cohort of Urban Ecology Global Fellows from universities across the country and, that same week, also welcomed 80+ Values-Based Partners from across the nation to participate in the inaugural National Values-Based Partner Convening. The three day convening focused on the theme, [Re]Generate Across Generations, and engaged partners in collaborative, hands-on activities and critical conversations that connected us with each other, the land, and the practice of Regenerative Neighborhood Development.

On Saturday, June 18, we welcomed 400+ members of the SWF community to The Commonwealth for our Fifth Annual Juneteenth Celebration of freedom + community. We invite you to take a moment to read about the happenings at The Commonwealth and hope to see you this summer!

Fried Green Tomatoes

This summer, we got a jump on the growing season in our three hoop houses. The hoop houses are generally more than 20 degrees warmer than the temperature outside, creating the perfect environment to grow year round and, in the summer, to grow heirloom tomatoes early. More than a month ahead of normal, our green tomatoes are in abundance in the hoop houses.

During the National Values-Based Partner Convening in June, Gina Milum, representing Coalfield Development in Wayne, West Virginia, led a hands-on cooking demonstration of fried green tomatoes that were shared with convening participants. Fried green tomatoes are a culinary tradition of many cultures including Appalachia and are a favorite of the SWF Community whose cultural traditions are traced to Chicago via African Americans making the Great Migration from the Southern United States.

As we have an abundance of green tomatoes, we invite you to try this recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes by Diana Swenson-Siegel from Allrecipes

  • ½ cup milk
