Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival @ the Commons
On Friday, April 20, 2018, Sweet Water Foundation hosted the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival’s Neighborhood Tour in the Work-Shop at the Perry Ave Commons. In the days leading up to this special event, Sweet Water staff transformed the carpentry and design workshop into a unique theatre setting, utilizing SWF’s versatile, fractal seats.
Guests of all ages were mesmerized by the Afrofuturist puppeteer Tarish “Jeghetto” Pipkins from Atlanta, and family act The Joshua Show by Joshua Holden from Brooklyn. It was truly a magical and uplifting evening, bringing wonder, awe, and joy to all in attendance.
Following the show, the Tarish Pipkins led a puppet making workshop, using wood scraps from SWF’s carpentry program. Tarish makes many of his puppets from scrap materials and he was delighted at the opportunity to help bring SWF’s wood scraps to life via the art of puppetry. Tarish works with children with developmental disabilities and his puppets offer an interactive and creative learning tool. SWF is grateful that he shared his talents with our community and excited to find yet another way to transform “wastes” into beautiful objects.
